Austell's Rule on Tree Debris
If you hire Tree Service in Austell, the city expects that company to take the wood away. Austell's leaf and limb collection rules say that when a company is hired for landscaping of any kind, including tree removal, the company disposes of the yard waste, not the city. The city also won't pick up stumps or root balls. Every estimate from Elite Tree Service Marietta for an Austell home includes removing the logs, brush and chips from the property, unless you ask us to leave firewood.
The city's limits for your own yard work
For trimming you do yourself, Austell Public Works collects limbs up to 6 inches thick and 6 feet long, stacked parallel to the street in piles no more than 4 feet high and 4 feet wide. Leaves go in brown paper bags only, since plastic bags aren't picked up, and leaves and limbs have to be kept apart. The city is split into two zones with different collection days. Piles need to be at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on Monday.
Sweetwater Creek and the 2009 flood
Sweetwater Creek runs through Austell, bending north and then east of downtown. On September 22, 2009, the USGS measured 28,000 cubic feet per second on the creek, the greatest flow ever recorded there, and many homes and businesses west of Atlanta were completely submerged. The city's own photos from that week show residents being rescued from the Deerfield Creek subdivision and water over the Austell-Powder Springs Road bridge at Legion Park. Trees along the creek and in low subdivisions here deal with repeated flooding, bank erosion and silt piled against their trunks. Those conditions weaken roots without much visible change in the crown.
Working in a floodplain
Much of Austell is relatively flat, with few large hills, so water spreads out instead of draining fast. The city runs a floodplain management program and treats special flood hazard areas, land with at least a 1% chance of flooding in any year, as regulated. If your lot is in a mapped floodplain and the job involves more than cutting trees, such as regrading, filling or clearing a large area, check with the city before we start. A normal removal with the stump ground to grade usually isn't that kind of project, but it's better to ask first.
A small city, a quick visit
Austell covers about 6 square miles and had 7,713 residents at the 2020 census. Its seven city parks, including Collar Park and Legion Park, total about 36 acres. Most residential streets are within a few minutes of each other, so one visit can cover several trees or a few neighbors who want quotes at the same time. Austell Questions
Can I put the logs from my tree removal out for city pickup?
No. Austell doesn't collect debris from tree removal done by a hired company, and it doesn't take stumps or root balls. We haul all of it as part of the job.
My house is near Sweetwater Creek. Are trees there more likely to fall?
Trees that flood often or have eroding banks can lose root support, so they deserve more frequent checks. We look at the bank, the root flare and any lean before saying whether a tree is stable.
Do I need city approval to remove a tree in the floodplain?
Simply cutting a tree and grinding the stump flat is usually not a big project, but floodplain rules cover regrading and fill. If your plans include more than the tree, call Austell's floodplain staff at (770) 944-4300 first.
Can neighbors on my street get quotes the same day?
Yes. Have them call or submit the form, and we'll schedule the visits together. Each household still gets its own written estimate.
