Woodstock Requires a Permit, Even for Dead Trees
Before booking Tree Service in Woodstock, know that the city has one of the strictest tree rules in the area. Woodstock's tree preservation page says a permit is required to remove any tree over three inches in caliper anywhere in the city, and that dead or dying trees still need an approved permit. The good news is that the permit is free. Elite Tree Service Marietta will list each tree we propose to remove, with its species, size and condition, so you have what you need for the application.
How the residential allowance works
Under the city's standards, a residential lot can remove five or fewer trees per calendar year, other than specimen trees, with a no-fee permit. More than that, or any specimen tree, falls under the full ordinance, which may require a replanting or mitigation plan. Removing trees without a permit is fined by the inch: $150 per inch cut, and $175 per inch for specimen trees. On a 20-inch oak, that's $3,000 to $3,500. Applying first is far cheaper.
What counts as a specimen tree
Woodstock defines a specimen tree by size, type and condition. Oak, beech, ash, blackgum and sycamore qualify at 24 inches in caliper or more, and other species have their own 30-inch and 10-inch thresholds. A specimen also has to be in good condition: no more than two major dead limbs, a life expectancy over fifteen years and limited dieback. A big but failing oak may not qualify. Measuring and describing condition honestly helps the city make a fast decision.
A Woodstock job, step by step
1. Walk-through. We look at the trees with you, measure trunk size and note condition and the reasons for each removal or pruning cut. 2. Written estimate and tree list. You get the price and a description of each tree that you can use on the Tree Removal Permit Application. 3. Permit. The property owner applies to Community Development at City Hall Annex, 12453 Hwy 92 (770-592-6000). Don't schedule cutting until the permit is approved. 4. The work. Removals, pruning and stump grinding as listed. Pruning that doesn't remove a tree generally isn't what the removal permit covers, but ask the city if you're unsure. 5. Replanting, if required. If your permit includes replacement trees, we can suggest species and locations away from lines and foundations.
Growth and canopy
Woodstock grew from 10,050 residents in 2000 to 35,065 in 2020, with an estimated 39,895 in 2025, and in 2007 was named the tenth fastest-growing suburb in the United States. The city earned Tree City USA recognition from the Arbor Day Foundation for 2025, and its Greenprints trail plan follows Noonday Creek and the Little River. Census QuickFacts shows a 64.0% owner-occupied rate and a median owner-occupied value of $436,500.
Debris after the job
Red Oak Sanitation began residential service in Woodstock on July 1, 2026. Yard waste has to be bagged or bundled with limbs cut to 4 feet or less, and bags count toward the 8-bag limit per pickup. That works for light trimming you do yourself, but not for tree removal debris, so we haul ours away.
