From Mineral Springs to Subdivisions

Our Tree Service work in Lithia Springs happens in a place with an unusual history. In 1887 Judge Bowden and his investors bought the lithia mineral spring here, started bottling the water and opened the 300-room Sweet Water Hotel. The next year more than 30,000 tourists and health-seekers came. Mark Twain, the Vanderbilts and several presidents were among the visitors. The resort is gone, and the community is now mostly homes on wooded lots in northeast Douglas County. Elite Tree Service Marietta prunes, removes and grinds stumps for those homeowners.

A city that gave up its charter

Lithia Springs was incorporated in 1882, dissolved in 1933, incorporated again in 1994 and dissolved again in 2000, when residents voted 80% to 20% to give up the charter. It's now a census-designated place with 16,644 residents at the 2020 census, on about 13.4 square miles. Practically, that means Douglas County handles most local questions. Parts of the City of Douglasville's limits overlap the area along I-20, so check which government serves your address before you ask about rules or services.

Living beside the state park

Sweetwater Creek runs through the eastern part of the community, and Sweetwater Creek State Park, about 2,549 acres, lies along its southern edge. The park includes the ruins of the New Manchester mill, burned in July 1864, and about 9 miles of wooded trails. The creek has a rough flood record. Remnants of Hurricane Dennis damaged the park's main bridge in 2005, and Woodrow Wilson Park beside the creek flooded in 2009, when the creek reached the greatest flow ever recorded there. Homes near the creek and the park have more big trees, wetter ground and more storm debris than homes on the ridges.

What we look for on creek lots

Trees near Sweetwater Creek and its tributaries get flooded, undercut and silted in. On these lots, we pay attention to: 1. Exposed or undercut roots on the stream side, which reduce how well the tree is anchored 2. Silt buried against the trunk, which hides decay and can kill bark at the root flare 3. Lean toward the water or toward the house, and whether it has increased 4. Dead tops on sweetgum, poplar and water oak, which often appear a few years after repeated flooding

We never cut trees on park land. If your yard backs onto the park, we work only on your side of the line, and that's noted on your estimate.

Lithia Springs Questions

Lithia Springs isn't a city. Who do I ask about tree rules?

Douglas County for most addresses. Some properties along I-20 are inside the City of Douglasville, so confirm which applies to yours.

My backyard touches Sweetwater Creek State Park. Can you remove a dead tree that's on the park side?

No. Trees on park land belong to the state, so contact the park office about them. We can prune limbs that hang over your yard and remove trees on your side of the line.

The creek bank behind my house keeps eroding. Are the trees on it safe?

Erosion removes soil from around the roots and the anchoring weakens. We'll look at how much root is exposed and which way the tree would fall, and tell you whether it should come down before the next big storm.

Do you grind stumps near the creek?

Yes, as long as the stump is on your side of the property line. On soft creek-bank soil, grinding sometimes leaves a hole that has to be backfilled so the bank doesn't wash out. We'll explain the options, including leaving a low-cut stump to hold the bank.
