Vinings Is Not a City, and That Matters

When people search for Tree Service in Vinings, they often assume a city office will answer their questions. Vinings has never been incorporated. It is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Cobb County, first listed as a CDP in the 1990 census, so residents deal with Cobb County rather than a city hall of their own. Elite Tree Service Marietta works across Vinings, from single-family lots on the hills to the grounds of condo and townhome communities. We give every client a written estimate.

Where the ferry crossed

Around 1830 the area was known as Crossroads, then as Paces, after Hardy Pace, who ran a ferry across the Chattahoochee. It became a railroad construction station in the 1840s and took its name from William H. Vining. Union troops occupied it in 1864, and Pace's house, which had served as a Union hospital, was destroyed. Paces Ferry Road is still the main east-west road. The river still forms the community's southeastern edge, across from the Paces section of Buckhead.

Two very different kinds of client

The 2020 census counted 12,581 residents and 7,869 housing units in about 3.2 square miles, with 47.9% of households made up of a person living alone. That reflects a lot of apartments and condos. Our Vinings work splits roughly in two:

  • Homeowners on wooded, sloping lots, who usually want a few large trees pruned away from the roof or one dangerous tree removed
  • Associations and property managers for condo and townhome communities, who need a plan for many trees, with work spread over a budget year and scheduled around residents' parking

For associations, we can walk the grounds with the board or manager and give an estimate listing each tree by location and priority.

Slope and river bottom

Vinings sits between I-285 and the Chattahoochee, at about 915 feet in town and lower toward the river. Driveways are often steep, backyards fall away sharply, and the most valuable trees can be the hardest to reach. On a slope, a cut log rolls. On wet river-bottom soil, a loaded truck sinks and compacts the ground over the roots. We usually take hillside trees down in sections, lower the pieces on rigging and, when needed, carry them to the street. A crane is sometimes the safest option for a large tree over a house where nothing can be dropped.

Ash and river hardwoods

The Georgia Forestry Commission recorded emerald ash borer in Fulton and DeKalb counties, just across the river, in July 2013, the first finds in the state, and in Cobb County the next year. Green ash is common along Southern river bottoms, so lots that slope toward the Chattahoochee are worth checking. Signs of infestation include thinning in the top of the crown, bark stripped by woodpeckers and shoots sprouting from the trunk. An infested ash dries out and becomes brittle, which makes it more dangerous to climb the longer it stands. If you're not sure whether a tree is an ash, we'll identify it on the first visit.

When a storm hits

After a big storm, call your power company first if any line is involved. Then call (770) 308-8948. If a tree is on your roof, we'll lift it off in sections and can tarp the opening so you can contact your insurer. Get a free estimate

Vinings Questions

Who do I ask about tree rules in Vinings?

Cobb County, since Vinings isn't a city. If you live in a condo, townhome or HOA community, check the association's rules too. Trees in common areas usually belong to the association, not the owner of the closest unit.

Can you give our condo board a multi-year plan?

Yes. We walk the property, list each tree that needs work by location and urgency, and price the work so the board can schedule it over one or more budget years.

My driveway is too steep for a big truck. Can you still remove the tree?

Usually. Wood can be cut small and carried, or lowered by rope to a spot where a truck can reach. Very large trees over a house may call for a crane set up on the street.

Are ash trees a problem here?

Emerald ash borer has been recorded in Cobb County since 2014. If you have an ash with a thinning crown or woodpecker damage, have it checked. Infested ash become brittle and are harder to remove safely the longer you wait.
