Hiram Grew Up Quickly
In Hiram, a call for Tree Service usually involves trees that were in the way of growth or were left at its edges. The town was incorporated in 1891 and named for Hiram Baggett, its first postmaster. It counted 105 people in 1900 and 1,361 in 2000, then grew more than 160% by 2010 and another 39% by 2020, reaching 4,929. The 2025 estimate is 5,585. Most homes here are recent, built on land that was woods not long ago. Elite Tree Service Marietta handles the tree work that comes with that: woods-edge trees leaning toward new houses, yard trees that have outgrown their spots and stumps that block a finished lawn.
Woods-edge trees
When woods are cleared for a subdivision, the trees left along the new edge face sun and wind they never had before. Their shallow roots on the cleared side are often cut by grading. For the first several years they may look fine. Then a storm takes one over, or the crown thins on the side facing the houses. If your lot backs onto woods, look along the edge each spring for:
- new leans or cracked soil at the base
- dead tops on oaks and poplars
- pines with brown needles or resin spots on the bark
- trunks with mushrooms or soft wood near the ground
If a tree that could reach your house shows any of these, have it looked at.
Planting yard trees for the long run
Many Hiram yards came with young trees from the builder, and those trees are now big enough to show problems. Common issues include trees planted too deep with no root flare showing, girdling roots wrapped around the trunk, and species planted under lines or too close to the foundation. Cobb EMC's planting guidance is a good rule anywhere: never plant trees directly under power lines, keep short trees at least 25 feet away and medium trees at least 40 feet away. Structural pruning while a tree is young costs far less than fixing a bad fork once the tree is grown.

Hiram Questions
The trees at the edge of the woods behind my house look fine. Why worry?
Edge trees often lose roots during grading and then face wind they didn't grow up with. Problems may not show for years. A quick look at the base and crown each spring catches most of them early.
Can you fix a young tree that was planted too deep?
Sometimes. We can dig out soil and mulch piled against the trunk to expose the root flare, and cut girdling roots if they're found early. Badly buried trees may be better replaced.
There's a green transformer box next to my tree. Is that a problem?
GreyStone asks that shrubs be kept 10 feet from the transformer doors and 3 feet from the sides, so crews can work safely. Trees there may have roots near buried cable, so any digging, including stump grinding, starts with a Georgia 811 locate.
How long does a typical removal take in a Hiram subdivision?
A single medium-size tree with clear access is often done in part of a day, including chipping and cleanup. Big trees over a house, backyards with only a narrow side gate or several trees on one lot take longer. The estimate gives you an expected timeline.
