Subdivision Trees That Grew Up

Much of the Tree Service work in East Cobb comes from one fact: the neighborhoods are old enough now that their trees are huge. East Cobb began developing as an Atlanta suburb in the 1960s, and developers often left oaks, tulip poplars and pines standing between the new houses. Sixty years later those trees are full-size, well above the rooflines, and some are reaching the end of their safe life. Elite Tree Service Marietta prunes and removes trees on East Cobb lots of every age, with a written estimate first.

A Marietta address outside Marietta

East Cobb residents usually have Marietta mailing addresses but live outside the city limits. The area has stayed unincorporated. In May 2022, 73% of voters rejected a proposed City of East Cobb. That means Cobb County, not the City of Marietta, handles your property. Many East Cobb subdivisions also have active HOAs with their own rules on removing trees, especially in front yards and along entrances. Check those covenants before you schedule a removal. We're glad to give your HOA a written description of the tree and the reasons for removing it.

The tall-tree problem

Large, old trees tend to fail in a few typical ways, and we see each of them here:

  • Tulip poplars grow fast and very tall, and they shed big limbs, sometimes on calm summer days
  • Water and willow oaks planted or left in the 1960s and 1970s are now often hollowing at the base or losing big scaffold limbs
  • Loblolly pines left in narrow strips between houses snap in high wind or in ice, and they are targets for bark beetles once stressed

A good inspection looks at the root flare, any cavities, the attachment of large limbs and whatever the tree would hit if it fell. Our written estimate covers each of those.

Hills, the mountain and the river

East Cobb sits at about 1,056 feet, and its highest point is Sweat Mountain at 1,688 feet. To the southeast, the Chattahoochee forms part of its boundary, including the Chattahoochee Plantation area along the river. Lots on the mountain's flanks and the river bluffs have steep backyards. The area averages more than 50 inches of rain a year, so the ground below big trees is often wet. We keep heavy equipment off soft lawns and plan on rigging pieces down on slopes.

Power lines along subdivision streets

If your power comes from Cobb EMC, know how the co-op works: it trims 15 feet on each side of the center of primary poles and will consider removing a tree within 15 feet of a primary line. Don't trim a tree growing into a line yourself. Call your utility (Cobb EMC's tree line is 770-429-2100). Trees away from the lines are ours to handle.

East Cobb Questions

I have a Marietta address. Do the City of Marietta's rules apply to me?

Not if you live in East Cobb outside the city limits. Your property is under Cobb County, and possibly your HOA's covenants too. The mailing address doesn't decide which government handles your property.

A tulip poplar dropped a big limb on a calm day. Is the rest of the tree dangerous?

Poplars do sometimes shed limbs without warning. One drop doesn't condemn the tree, but it does mean it should be inspected. We'll look at the other big limbs and the trunk and tell you whether pruning or removal makes more sense.

Our HOA requires approval to remove a front-yard tree. Can you help?

Yes. We'll put the tree's species, size, condition and the reason for removal in writing so you can include it with your request to the HOA.

Will Cobb EMC remove a tree near the line in my backyard?

Cobb EMC says it will consider removing trees within 15 feet of primary wire and trees that are dead or endangering a service line. Call the co-op first. If they won't take it, we can.
