Trees in a City That Grew Around Its Square
Tree Service in Marietta means working around some of the oldest residential streets in metro Atlanta. The Georgia General Assembly recognized the town in 1834, and houses like Oakton (1838) and the William Root House (around 1845) are still standing. Many lots near the Square carry hardwoods that were planted generations ago and now hang over slate roofs, porches and narrow driveways. Elite Tree Service Marietta prunes, removes and grinds stumps for homeowners across the city, and we give a written estimate before any saw starts.
Six historic districts, many big trees
Marietta has six historic districts, including Northwest Marietta, Whitlock Avenue, Washington Avenue and Church-Cherokee Streets. Yards there tend to be smaller than in newer subdivisions, with mature canopy trees close to the house, older sidewalks and overhead service wires running from the street. Work on those lots is usually done in pieces: a climber removes limbs in short sections and lowers them on ropes so nothing lands on a roof, a fence or a neighbor's car. Before work on a property in one of these districts, it is worth asking the city whether anything about the job needs review. We are happy to help you work out what to ask.
A city of renters and owners
Census QuickFacts puts Marietta's owner-occupied housing rate at 47.2%, so more than half of homes are rented. That changes who calls us. Landlords and property managers often want a dead tree out before a tenant moves in, or a limb lifted off a roof before it wears through the shingles. Tenants may notice the problem first but aren't allowed to authorize the job. If you rent, ask your landlord to call (770) 308-8948. If you own rental homes in Marietta, we can walk several addresses in one visit and quote each one separately.
The mountain to the northwest
Kennesaw Mountain rises to 1,808 feet just outside the city, and the slopes around it hold hardwood forest. Homes backing onto those ridges and onto the creek valleys that drain them often have tall trees on steep ground. A tree on a slope leans toward open sky over time, which usually means toward the downhill house. Sloped lots also make it harder to get equipment in, so we look at the access route on the first visit, not on the day of the job.
Clay, rain and root plates
Marietta averages about 54.6 inches of rain a year and sits in USDA hardiness zone 7b. Much of the Piedmont here has red clay subsoil, the kind soil scientists describe as kaolinite clay that recovers poorly once it is compacted. Two things follow. First, after several wet days, a shallow root plate in soaked clay can give way in wind that the same tree would shrug off in a dry month. Second, heavy machines rolling across a wet lawn can crush the soil around the roots of trees you want to keep. When the ground is soft, we lay mats or wait.
Common jobs around Marietta

- Removing pines killed by bark beetles, often several in one stand
- Taking out ash trees in decline (emerald ash borer was first recorded in Cobb County in 2014)
- Clearing limbs off service drops and roofs after a summer thunderstorm
- Grinding stumps left by earlier removals so a bed or patio can go in

Marietta Facts That Affect Tree Work
- Historic districts. Marietta has six historic districts, among them Northwest Marietta, Whitlock Avenue, Washington Avenue and Church-Cherokee Streets, where older homes sit close to large, long-established trees.
- Housing mix. Census QuickFacts (2020-2024) lists a 47.2% owner-occupied housing rate, a median owner-occupied home value of $448,500 and 24,707 households in the city.
- Climate. Marietta is in USDA hardiness zone 7b and averages 54.63 inches of precipitation a year, with a record low of minus 12 degrees F.
- Electric utility. Inside much of the city, power comes from Marietta Power under the Board of Lights and Water. That utility, not the homeowner, deals with lines on poles along the street.
- Ash borer. The Georgia Forestry Commission lists Cobb County among the counties where emerald ash borer has been found, with detection recorded in 2014.

Marietta Questions
I live in one of Marietta's historic districts. Can I just cut down a tree in my yard?
Don't assume either way. Call the city before you schedule removal of a large tree on a property in a historic district and ask what applies to your lot. We'll describe the tree, its condition and the reason for removal in writing so you have what you need for that conversation.
A limb is resting on the wire from the pole to my house. Who handles that?
Inside much of the city that line belongs to Marietta Power. Call the utility first and stay away from the limb. Once the line is safe or de-energized, we can take out the rest of the limb and the tree.
Why did my oak fall over after a week of rain when it looked healthy?
Saturated clay loses its grip on roots, and a heavy, leafed-out crown catches a lot of wind. If the soil has cracked or lifted on one side of another tree, or it has started to lean, keep people away from it and call us.
I own two rentals in Marietta. Can you quote both in one trip?
Yes. We can walk each property, note the trees that need work and give a separate written estimate for each address, so you can approve them one at a time.
