A New City With Old Trees

Tree Service in Mableton covers a lot of ground. Voters approved cityhood in November 2022, and the city that took shape in 2023 is now the largest in Cobb County, with an estimated 78,820 residents within its new limits. The name goes back to Robert Mable, a Scottish farmer who bought 300 acres here in 1843. His house still stands on Floyd Road. Many of the trees now leaning over Mableton roofs grew up on that old farm and woodland ground. Elite Tree Service Marietta prunes, removes and grinds stumps across the city, and every job starts with a written estimate.

Rules that are still settling

Mableton was incorporated once before, in 1912, and gave up its charter in 1916 after a flood overwhelmed its sewer system. As the new city sets up its own departments and ordinances, some rules for residents are still changing. If you are planning a large removal, especially on land tied to a new development or a zoning condition, ask the city or Cobb County which rules apply to your address. We'll describe the tree and the work in writing so you have something concrete to show them.

Three kinds of ground

  • Along the Chattahoochee. The river forms Mableton's southeastern border with Fulton County. Lots near the river have steeper slopes, wetter low spots and the tall hardwoods that grow in river bottoms. Slope and access drive most of the planning.
  • Nickajack Creek. The creek runs near the northern edge of the city, toward Smyrna, past the historic Nickajack covered bridge built around 1848 to 1850. Creekside trees take frequent flooding and bank undercutting.
  • The ridges in between. Older neighborhoods and newer subdivisions on higher ground carry more pines and mixed oaks, where bark beetles, storm breakage and limbs over the roof are the usual calls.

Lots big enough for real work

Census QuickFacts lists 29,109 households in Mableton and a 64.6% owner-occupied rate. The median owner-occupied value of $313,100 is well below Smyrna's next door, and many lots are larger and more wooded than in the cities to the north. That opens up options. A tree can sometimes be felled in one piece into open lawn instead of being taken down in sections, which saves time and money. A wooded back acre may need clearing of dead and leaning trees rather than a single removal. We'll explain which approach fits and what it costs.

The Silver Comet corridor

The Silver Comet Trail, a 61.5-mile paved rail trail running from Smyrna to the Alabama line, crosses Mableton. Homes that back onto the trail often have trees whose limbs reach over it. The trail corridor isn't yours to cut, so we work only on your side. Before a large tree that could fall toward the trail comes down, we plan the direction of fall with that in mind.

Mableton Questions

Does the City of Mableton or Cobb County handle my tree questions now?

It depends on the topic, and the split is still being worked out as the new city sets up. Call the city first. If they send you to Cobb County, at least you know which office handles your question.

My lot runs down toward the Chattahoochee. Can you get equipment in?

Often we can, but steep slopes and wet bottoms may mean pieces are lowered by rope and carried out instead of driven out. We plan access on the first visit and write it into the estimate.

Can you clear dead trees out of my wooded back acreage?

Yes. On bigger lots we often quote a cleanup of dead, leaning and storm-broken trees as one project, with the option to chip brush on site or haul it away.

A tree near the Silver Comet Trail is leaning over my fence. Whose is it?

Trees in the trail corridor belong to the trail. Report it to the trail's managers. If it's on your side of the line, we can remove it and plan the fall away from the trail.
