Canton's Two Sides of the River

The Etowah River runs east to west through the middle of Canton, and that shapes much of the Tree Service work here. Low ground along the river and its creeks grows sycamores, river birch, sweetgums and big water oaks in soil that floods and stays wet. Higher ground on either side carries pines and upland oaks in drier red clay. Elite Tree Service Marietta works on both sides, and our estimates explain why a tree on one side needs a different approach than one on the other.

Mill-village yards

Canton Cotton Mills made the denim sold as Canton Denim until the mills closed in 1981. The older neighborhoods around the mills and downtown have small lots, houses close to the street and big trees that have shaded those porches for generations. Removals there usually happen in sections, with limbs roped down between houses, over fences and around the overhead service lines that serve older homes. If you own one of those houses, a light crown cleaning every few years usually keeps an old tree healthy longer than one heavy pruning after a storm.

A county seat that tripled

Canton is the seat of Cherokee County. Its population went from 7,709 in 2000 to 22,958 in 2010, nearly tripling, then to 32,973 in 2020, and was estimated at 40,778 in 2025. Most of that growth is newer subdivisions on the edges of the city, where leftover pines and woods-edge hardwoods are now big enough to reach roofs. Census QuickFacts lists 12,398 households, 2.85 people per household and a 55.6% owner-occupied rate.

The greenway along the river

Heritage Park, about 30 acres, is the first phase of the Etowah River Greenway, with walking and biking trails and a natural amphitheater. A second phase north of it adds about 60 acres of recreation fields. If you live near the greenway or another public strip along the river, trees on public land aren't yours to cut, and we'll stay on your side. We'll also tell you if a dead tree on public land looks like it could fall onto your property, so you can report it.

Pests to watch in Cherokee County

The Georgia Forestry Commission recorded emerald ash borer in Cherokee County in 2015. Green ash grows naturally along river bottoms like the Etowah's, so lots near the river are the most likely to have ash. Pines on the drier upland lots are the ones bark beetles go after when drought hits. Both problems turn trees brittle fast. A dead ash or pine is more dangerous, and more expensive, to remove the longer it stands.

Tree Removal in Marietta, GA

Canton Questions

We have a big sycamore near the river. Will it keep growing toward the house?

Sycamores grow large and fast in wet bottomland, and limbs reaching over a roof can be shortened with reduction cuts. If the base or main limbs show decay, removal may be safer. We'll tell you which.

Is my tree in the city or county?

Canton has grown into what was county land, and a Canton mailing address doesn't always mean a home is inside the city limits. Check with the City of Canton or Cherokee County to see which handles your property.

How do I tell if my tree is an ash?

Ash leaves are compound, with several leaflets, and grow in opposite pairs on the twig. Older trees have diamond-patterned bark. If you're not sure, we'll identify it on the first visit.

Can you work on a mill-village lot without damaging my old house?

Yes. On tight older lots we take trees down in small sections and lower each piece by rope, and we protect porches, roofs and fences.
