Lower, Wider and Greener Than the Metro

Cartersville sits lower than most of the towns we serve, at about 787 feet, and its Tree Service needs follow from that. The Etowah River runs through a broad valley south of downtown. The city covers about 28.6 square miles of land, a lot of room for 23,187 people (2020), so lots are larger, with more open ground and woods around homes. Elite Tree Service Marietta works in Cartersville on in-town yards, valley-bottom properties and wooded lots out toward the lake.

Valley soils

The Etowah valley south of town has deeper, wetter soils than the red clay ridges of Cobb County. Trees there, including sycamore, sweetgum, river birch, box elder and big bottomland oaks, grow fast and large, and they often have broad, heavy limbs that grew in open sun. When a valley lot floods or stays soggy for weeks, those big crowns are more likely to tip over. Our inspections in the valley look at drainage and root anchorage as much as at the crown.

A county seat rebuilt after Cassville

Cartersville became the Bartow County seat in 1867 after Cassville was destroyed during the Civil War. The town was founded in 1832 as Birmingham and named for Col. Farish Carter. Older neighborhoods around downtown often have large, long-established yard trees, and on those lots they may stand near old foundations, stone walls and brick walks, so we plan removals and stump grinding to avoid cracking or lifting anything nearby.

Toward the lake

Lake Allatoona's dam sits east of town, and Red Top Mountain State Park covers about 1,776 acres on a peninsula in the lake just outside the city limits. The mountain is named for its iron-rich ground. Homes on the wooded hills toward the lake deal with the same things as homes around Acworth: tall pines in thin soil, steep driveways and wind off open water.

Ash, pines and Bartow County records

The Georgia Forestry Commission recorded emerald ash borer in Bartow County in 2016. Ash grows along the Etowah bottoms, so valley properties are where we find it most. Pines on the drier hills suffer most in drought years, when bark beetles move in. Any pine that turns color quickly in summer should be checked along with its neighbors.

Cartersville Questions

Do you really come out to Cartersville?

Yes. It's at the north edge of our area, so we usually group Cartersville estimates and jobs on the same days. Call and we'll tell you the next available date.

My valley lot floods every few years. Should the big trees come out?

Not automatically. Many bottomland species handle flooding well. The risk is in trees with root decay, heavy one-sided crowns or eroding banks. We'll go through them one by one.

There's an old stone wall right next to a stump I want ground. Can you do it?

Usually. We grind carefully near the wall and stop short of anything that could crack or shift. If roots are wrapped into the stonework, we may recommend leaving part of the stump.

Who removes trees on the lake shoreline?

Much of the Lake Allatoona shoreline is federal land managed by the Corps of Engineers. Don't cut there without written permission from them. We'll work on your side of the line only.

Is a box elder worth keeping?

Box elders grow fast in the valley but have brittle wood and often split at weak forks. A young, well-formed one can be pruned to last. An old box elder with cracks or decay over a house is usually a removal.
